Gabriel Ruiz-Bernal Winner of the XXI Fidelio Competition for Piano Composition in Madrid, Spain. A Spanish composer, pianist, organist and producer established in the Washington DC area. His love for music started in Melilla (Spain) and continued in Málaga at the Conservatorio Superior de Música.
Since then, Gabriel has performed recitals in many countries as piano soloist, chamber music, concerti with orchestras, including premieres of his own compositions. He also has served in the jury panel at piano competitions.
He has received numerous awards during his performance career and today he is proud to enjoy a diversified musical portfolio, not just limited to the classical repertory. Gabriel is known as a composer, instructor, classical and jazz pianist. He recorded musical styles from Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Chopin, Scriabin, Rachmaninoff, Gershwin, to Spanish composers, his own works, jazz arrangements and orchestral works. He has participated in film scoring collaborations, and one of the films he scored received a New York Emmy nomination.
Gabriel is very grateful to the generous and dedicated teachers that worked with him. From his childhood teacher, Carmen Arana, to his principal teacher at the Conservatorio Superior de Música Alfredo Gil, Eva Pierrou at Levine School of Music in Washington, Elizabeth Caluda and Bob Larson at Shenandoah University in Winchester, VA and Jacinto Choza, his doctoral advisor at the University of Sevilla, Spain.
Gabriel pursued additional studies at Yale University and NYU Steinhardt. Currently he is a member of the piano faculty at the Levine School of Music in Washington, DC where he teaches classical piano, jazz piano, and applied improvisation and composition.
During free time, Gabriel is a crew member of a sailboat, he practices sea-kayaking, kayak-sailing, biking and goes on runs and hikes. Gabriel and Lisa travel frequently to Spain to visit family and friends.
